1 – Minnesota has a 5 point lead with Minnesota having 2 games left and Colorado having 3. If Minnesota wins one of their last two games, or if Colorado loses a single game in regulation, Minnesota will advance, regardless of Colorado's performance. (COL's total possible points = 88)
2 - Minnesota will clinch the 8th playoff spot tonight if Minnesota wins tonight or Colorado loses in regulation.
3 - If Minnesota and Colorado ends the season tied in points, Colorado will advance into the playoffs based on their future ROW, which will have to total 37 or 38, in every possible case, excluding complications due to shootout victories.*
4 – Because of the ROW, Minnesota must lead Colorado at the end of the season in points to advance, unless the shootout victories exception happens (which is highly, highly unlikely).
NOTE: There are a few different scenarios that can develop if either team takes a shootout win. If a team obtains a shootout win, the PSA will detail all of those different options in the next PSA.

Previous Game Recap: Wild @ Winnipeg, April 3rd
Winnipeg 4 - 1 Minnesota
4/5/16, 7:52 AM
by FreeCandyVanDriver
Minnesota traveled to Winnipeg for a chance to close out the playoff race Sunday night, and for the third straight evening, didn't show up with intensity from the opening puck drop. For a team making a playoff push, they showed none of the drive, allowing Winnipeg the initiative all evening. Physically pushed around from the get-go, Minnesota had no answer to Winnipeg's first punch of energy, and never got into the game. In perhaps the worst defensive performance all season, Minnesota gave up positioning, space and lanes – but were never willing to give up the body in an effort that justly deserves to be mocked and questioned.
Winnipeg got the push early and often offensively, while minimizing time on the puck in their own end, running a two-trap system within their own zone and committing two forwards to an aggressive forecheck that seemingly turned every Minnesota transition in a nervy affair. Minnesota looked beat from the puck drop, but managed to go into the locker room after the first period even, as Dubnyk did his job well. As per usual in games where Minnesota gives up the first goal, the second period was brutal – giving up two goals early and not able to establish anything resembling an offensive presence to that point.
Into the third period, Minnesota started to show signs of energy and concern, clawing and scratching their way into a possession game and getting good looks – capping it off by a snipe of a goal by Granlund on a perfectly executed screen by Zach Parise. Down 2-1 at that point, with momentum in their favor, Minnesota buckled on a Winnipeg 1-on-2 breakaway by Copp on the very next shift, cutting between an uncommitted Suter and a Matt Dumba that pulled himself out of position with minimal spacial recognition of Suter's drifting into the lane. Suter didn't take the space, the body, or the puck – while Dumba shifted to accommodate the space where the play would be choked off. The gap was left, and Copp somehow walked in and scored on a handcuffed Dubnyk.
I wrote an exceedingly detailed breakdown of the 1-on-2 breakaway, an analysis that you can find HERE
While there was still time left to turn their fortunes around, it was effectively over – Minnesota just wanted out from that point on.
The most telling fact is this: it was hard tell the difference in effort from a Minnesota team that was rightfully dejected after the Copp goal from the Minnesota effort in the first 40 minutes.

4/5/16, 8:19 AM, (edited roster news 3:03pm)
by FreeCandyVanDriver
Let's just get the elephant in the room out of the way right off the bat.
Ryan Suter's last performance against Winnipeg may have been the worst performance of his career, in addition to being possibly being the worst performance by any Wild defenseman this season. It was, quite literally, an unacceptable performance from a player who's leading this team in a playoff race that he doesn't seem interested in.
Very lucky to only have a -2 +/- on the evening, Suter looked like the weakest link on a defensive core that was beleaguered by the physical, grinding playing style of Winnipeg. Suter, with all of his 4.4% shooting percentage, jumped forward into the attack several times too many – all of them poorly timed and ill-conceived, with most resulting in odd-man rushes against an exposed back line. Consistently missing multiple defensive assignments, not committing to the playing body numerous times, stepping out of receiving a body check and giving up possession along the boards too many times to count, Suter's performance was nothing short of abysmal – and not just from the perspective of the fact that he's a team leader. Seventh defender Nate Prosser took better positions, positioning guru Jonas Brodin took and dished better body checks, and Marco “The Drifter” Scandella established more body presence in front of the net. Suter looked, played, and acted like an empty jersey. Calls for him to be benched have gaining in volume over the last several weeks, now seem - at minimum - justifiable after the Winnipeg game.
It was, in short, a really bad day at the office for Ryan Suter.
Brent Burns and the playoff-clinching San Jose Sharks roll into St. Paul tonight, playing for a chance at catching Los Angles for second place in the Pacific Division. An established team that knows how to adapt, San Jose can stifle attacks in multiple ways, from layered traps to aggressive forechecking to a lane collapsing umbrella defense. They attack in waves, patiently building the attack during the transition game, capable of utilizing breakout passes, defenders pushing into the rush, and overwhelming numbers in a responsible manner. Minnesota should be well prepared for the San Jose style of attack – they've seen it every day in practice – because it's the same style the Wild look to play.
In roster news, Jared Spurgeon is skating with the team, and is getting the go-ahead nod to play alongside Suter tonight. Thomas Vanek is also skating, but has been declared a healthy scratch for this evening, with the club looking to have him in top form for the playoff push. Carter is still out on personal leave. The Wild recalled Christian Folin and Zac Delpe from AHL-affiliate Iowa yesterday, offering coverage and depth to the active roster due to the recent run of injuries. Delpe gets a start tonight. Speaking of Iowa, Mike Reilly was assigned to the AHL club after it was announced that Folin and Prosser would get the start. The move gets two games for Reilly down in Iowa instead of sitting in the press box in Minnesota for two games.
The playoff race is anything but a race at this point. Over the last six combined games for Minnesota and Colorado, they left all 12 points on the table. Make no mistake - neither team is pushing for the playoffs with anything resembling momentum. Time has been on Minnesota's side, however, and at this point, it takes a single win for Minnesota or a single regulation loss by Colorado for Minnesota to clinch the 8th and final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

  • Devan Dubnyk gets the official start tonight. (10:56am)
  • There's debate right now on the coaching staff: the third defensive pairing is either Reilly-Dumba or Folin-Prosser; one pairing gets picked, the other two players get benched. Might be a message being sent to the young kids to get the act together. (11:07am)
  • It's Folin-Prosser in, with the Reilly-Dumba pairing out. (12:58pm)
  • Official: Mike Reilly reassigned to Iowa. This should get him 2 games down in Iowa instead of sitting two in a row up in the Minnesota press box. (3:03pm)

Season series: This is the second of three meetings. In the first, the Detroit Red Wings rode two power-play goals and two Todd Bertuzzi even-strength goals to a 5-2 win at Joe Louis Arena. The Red Wings are 11-3-1 in their past 15 visits to Minnesota.
Big story: Can the Minnesota Wild finally break the monotony and start reaping the benefits of their offseason roster moves? The inconsistent Wild are 2-4-1 in February. The Red Wings seemed to have righted their ship with a three-game win streak last week, but two consecutive losses and injuries to key players raise new questions.
: In Minnesota’s case, the cause of frustration isn’t the absence of a star player, but the addition of two of them. Zach Parise and Ryan Suter joined the Wild in the offseason, bringing lofty expectations to a team that missed the Stanley Cup Playoffs for a fourth consecutive season in 2011-12. It hasn't exactly panned out: The Wild haven’t won more than two games in a row and rank 29th in goals-per-game (2.0).
The low point may have come Thursday, a 4-3 loss to the struggling Colorado Avalanche at home. The Wild entered the third period with a one-goal lead but couldn’t protect it and fell in a shootout.
"It was there to be taken, if you do the things to take it. There was a lack of urgency, I would say, in a lot of areas," coach Mike Yeo said. "I don't think we were prepared to play the right way. ... We need more consistency. We need some people to really step up."
: Losing a seven-time Norris Trophy winner can be hard; Nicklas Lidstrom’s retirement -- along with nagging injuries to key players Bertuzzi, Johan Franzen and Carlo Colaiacovo -- have exposed gaps in the defense early and often.
Those looked to be filled in the three-game win streak, when Detroit allowed four goals. But with nine allowed in the past two outings, both losses, the wounds have been reopened. In the most recent, a 5-2 loss to the Anaheim Ducks on Friday, a late tie was broken with two goals in the third period.
"We felt good going out for the third, but unfortunately those two quick ones kind of killed the game," captain Henrik Zetterberg said.

Who's Hot:

: In the last four games, Ryan Suter has doubled his point total on the season. The blueliner has four assists during the stretch, bringing his point total to eight (0-8=8).
: Tomas Tatar has two goals and three points in the past two games.
